Moscow’s Drivers Data Leak
On Saturday, various Russian media outlets reported about a database being sold in an underground forum. The dump includes over 50 million records of Moscow’s drivers’ data from 2006 to 2019. And the specific data points include;
Full names Dates of birth Phone numbers VIN codes License plate numbers Car brand and model Car year of registration
A Russian media named Kommersant tried calling some from the sold database, resulting in it being valid. Though some are old and useless, the sale of whole 50 million records is tagged for just $800. As a complementary offer, the purchase includes some data on the exact nature of 2020 too but stopped when Russia switched to using a central storage system instead of regional databases. This led to one point pullout for everything. While the source is unknown, the hacker who’s selling it revealed they had obtained it from an insider in the Moscow traffic police department. Though this cannot be verified, experts say this could be true as the data structure and records for the latest data can only be obtained in such a way. While some dispute it by theorizing it as vulnerability exploitation by hackers in regulatory’s websites, some say it’s just a pickup and reselling of old data. Last year, two instances were reported about hackers selling Moscow’s motorists’ data on the dark web. And since a reselling deal, it’s now offered for a cheap price.
